Hamilton's Javier Muñoz to Receive Howard Ashman Award for HIV Activism

Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) will present Javier Muñoz, star of Broadway's Hamilton, with the 2016 Howard Ashman Award for his activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS at the annual Howard Ashman Award & Cabaret on Monday, September 19 at Joe's Pub.
In 2002, Muñoz (who is also a recent cancer survivor) was diagnosed with HIV and continues to speak out about his status to counter the stigma directed at people living with HIV/AIDS. Proceeds from the cabaret will support GMHC's programs, services, and advocacy, which benefit roughly 10,000 clients every year.
Marty Thomas (Xanadu, Wicked) will serve as host of the cabaret. The evening's performers will include Ana Villafañe (On Your Feet!), Annie Golden (Broadway Bounty Hunter), Robin De Jesús (Homos, Or Everyone in America), Rosie Lani Fiedelman (The Lion King), Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King), and additional surprise guests.
The Howard Ashman Award is named after the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, who passed away due to AIDS-related complications in 1991.

That's why I am committed to using my voice to raise awareness about HIV-related stigma and other barriers that block people from seeking care.
