The 57th Annual Antoinette Perry (Tony) Awards were awarded tonight in a ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York City that was hosted by stage and film star Hugh Jackman.
The hit musical Hairspray took an early lead and held onto it for most of the evening, taking home numerous awards including the prize for Best Musical. It also was honored for its costume design, score, book, featured actor (Dick Latessa), and director (Jack O’Brien). Hairspray stars Marissa Jaret Winokur and Harvey Fierstein took two of the most hotly-contested awards of the night, Best Leading Actress and Best Leading Actor in a Musical, over Gypsy star Bernadette Peters and Nine star Antonio Banderas, respectively.
The revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night took home awards for Best Revival of a Play and for leading actor and actress, Brian Dennehy and Vanessa Redgrave. Richard Greenberg won for his play Take Me Out, which also took awards for featured actor Denis O’Hare and director Joe Mantello.
