Mokae, who left South Africa in the 1960s, became well known for his work in Fugard plays, also appearing in the Broadway productions of A Lesson from Aloes, Blood Knot, and The Song of Jacob Zulu, and the Off-Broadway premiere of Boesman and Lena. He also appeared in a television version of Master Harold opposite Matthew Broderick in the title role.
The actor’s many film and television credits included Cry Freedom, A Dry White Season, The West Wing, and Monk.
He is survived by his wife, Madelyn, and his daughter, Chantlo, among other relatives.
