Selections from Taylor Mac’s epic A 24-Decade History of Popular Music will be available to HBO subscribers starting June 27, following a world premiere for the concert documentary on June 14 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

A finalist for 2017 Pulitzer Prize, A 24-Decade History of Popular Music is an ambitious 24-hour cabaret extravaganza in which Mac performs an overview of American music since the time of independence, dedicating roughly an hour to each decade. Wearing outrageous costumes by Machine Dazzle and delivering unexpected renditions of well-known standards, Mac traces the course of popular music, deconstructing some cherished myths along the way.

This new film by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, titled Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music, condenses that marathon into 106 minutes. If you missed it live, this is an opportunity to see Mac in action — without dedicating a sleepless day to the experience.
