Principal casting has been finalized for the previously announced upcoming Broadway production of William Shakespeare's King Lear, starring 2018 Tony Award winner Glenda Jackson in the title role. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold, will begin previews February 28, 2019, and will open April 4, 2019, at the Golden Theatre and will play a strictly limited engagement through July 7.
The production will also star Tony Award winner Jayne Houdyshell, Elizabeth Marvel, Aisling O'Sullivan, Pedro Pascal, John Douglas Thompson, and Ruth Wilson. The production will feature Sean Carvajal, Dion Johnstone, Russell Harvard, and Matthew Maher, with additional casting to be announced.
The critically acclaimed creative team features scenic design by Miriam Buether, costume design by Ann Roth, lighting design by Jane Cox, and sound design by Scott Lehrer. Composer Philip Glass will provide an original score for the production.
Jackson recently completed a run in Edward Albee's Three Tall Women on Broadway, for which she received Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards for her performance. Jackson performed the title role in King Lear at London's Old Vic in 2016, her first stage appearance after 23 years of serving as a member of Parliament. This forthcoming Broadway production is unrelated to that staging.
