The North American tour of Green Day’s American Idiot opened its Los Angeles engagement at the Ahmanson Theatre on Wednesday, March 14.

The musical, which follows a group of working-class characters, is directed by Michael Mayer, who co-wrote the musical’s book with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. The show has won the 2011 Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album,” two 2010 Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among other honors.

Van Hughes stars as Johnny, the role in which he concluded American Idiot‘s Broadway run, with the principal cast also including Jake Epstein as Will, Scott J. Campbell as Tunny, Joshua Kobak as St. Jimmy, Leslie McDonel as Heather, Gabrielle McClinton as Whatsername, and Nicci Claspell as The Extraordinary Girl.

Among the opening night guests were Andrea Bowen, John Gallagher Jr., Tom Hanks, Marcia Gay Harden, Perez Hilton, Tom Hulce, Tom Kitt, Corey Reynolds, Tara Reynolds, Bob Saget, Eulala Scheel, Rita Wilson, and Charlayne Woodard.
