Laura Ingalls Wilder’s tale of family life in the old West, Little House on the Prairie began life as a series of books, beloved by little girls everywhere, before becoming a hugely popular television series in 1974, starring Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, and a young girl named Melissa Gilbert as Laura. Now, the next step in the journey is the musical Little House on the Prairie, which is beginning its national tour this month at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. TheaterMania got a chance to sit in a rehearsal and talk to its director, Francesca Zambello, and stars Kara Lindsay, Steve Blanchard — and Gilbert herself, who is now playing the role of Ma.
