Hadestown Has $10.2 Million Opening Weekend in Movie Theaters

Bleecker Street’s event cinema division Crosswalk and collaborator LD Entertainment have announced that the film capture of the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown grossed $10.2 million in 1949 theaters this past weekend, narrowly besting Hamilton to become the biggest opening weekend ever for a live theater pro shot.

Hamilton pulled in $10.1 million its opening weekend when it was released in theaters in September 2025. The live capture had been available for streaming on Disney+ for five years at that point.

Written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown puts a new spin on the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Musical.

The film capture was directed by Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound, and includes members of the original Broadway cast (Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and Patrick Page as Hades) performing from the stage of London’s Lyric Theatre.

TheaterMania’s review called the pro shot “magnificent,” with the critic opining, “Hadestown is set to play movie theaters for five nights only, but I hope this excellent film capture lives on somewhere that is accessible to a wide audience.”
