The upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical — set for a Christmas Day 2023 North American release — dropped its first official trailer, including a sample of Fantasia Barrino’s rendition of “I’m Here.” Barrino, who played Celie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple, reprises the role for the film. The star-studded cast also includes Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks (reprising her Tony-nominated role as Sophia), Corey Hawkins, H.E.R. and many other stage and screen veterans.

Take a look at the trailer below.

Based on the novel by Alice Walker, the stage version of The Color Purple premiered on Broadway in 2005, featuring a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. A revival, directed by John Doyle and starring Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, opened on Broadway in 2015 and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The property was first adapted for the screen in 1985 under the direction of Steven Spielberg. He produces this musical remake, alongside Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. Marcus Gardley has penned the screenplay and Blitz Bazawule will direct.
