Flashback Friday: From The Color Purple Costars to Fellow Tony Nominees

On Tuesday morning, Brandon Victor Dixon and Renée Elise Goldsberry became two of this season's Tony-nominated performers — Dixon for his performance as Eubie Blake in Shuffle Along and Goldsberry for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton. As the two embark on a busy awards season, we decided to look back 11 years to when they performed side by side in the original production of the musical The Color Purple — which has returned this season and racked up a ton of accolades. Goldsberry was the musical's original Nettie while Dixon earned his first Tony nomination for his performance as Harpo.
