Drama Desk Award Winner Nicol Williamson Has Died

Drama Desk Award winner and Tony Award nominee Nicol Williamson died last month in Amsterdam, according to the Associated Press. He was 75.


Williamson appeared in nine Broadway shows in 30 years, beginning with John Osborne’s Inadmissible Evidence in 1996, and including celebrated productions of Hamlet and Uncle Vanya, in which he played the title roles; the musical Rex, in which he played Henry VIII, Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite and Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing.


He made headlines for his role as John Barrymore in 1981’s I Hate Hamlet after reportedly battling with co-star Evan Handler, and in 1996, he returned to Broadway to play Barrymore in the solo show Jack: A Night on the Town with John Barrymore.


Wiliamson also appeared in film and televisions versions of Hamlet, Inadmssible Evidence, Macbeth, and The Resistible Rise of Arturo I. His many other well-known film roles included Merlin in Excalibur, Sherlock Holmes in The Seven Percent Solution, and Little John in Robin and Marian.


He is survived by his wife, Jill Townsend, and his son Luke.
