California Cancels Performances Amid COVID-19 Concerns

BroadwaySF, Center Theatre Group, and more have announced closings amid a citywide mandate prohibiting large gatherings of 1,000 or more.

Performances throughout the state of California have been canceled as a result of city-wide mandates as well as the latest mandate from California Department of Public Health, which requires the postponement or cancellation of all gatherings of 250 people or more. The following theaters and productions are among the first to notify the press of their schedule changes.

BroadwaySF announced yesterday that it had canceled Hamilton, The Last Ship, and more of its productions through March 25 in accordance with San Francisco's recent mandate prohibiting large gatherings of 1,000 people or more in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The cancellations began last night.

"We take the health and safety of our patrons, staff and community seriously and urge everyone to continue to follow the guidelines set forth by public health officials," Scott Walton, BroadwaySF director of communications, said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as we receive them."

The Last Ship was set to conclude its run on March 22. Hamilton is still scheduled to run through May 31 at the BroadwaySF Orpheum Theatre, assuming the ban isn't extended. Customers who bought tickets for the canceled performances on the BroadwaySF website will receive full refunds.

American Conservatory Theater announced today that their productions of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's Gloria and Lydia R. Diamond's Toni Stone have been canceled effective immediately. According to a statement released by the company, though, "For those ticket buyers who will not be able to see a live performance of Gloria or Toni Stone, we are thrilled to share that we are actively engaged in developing an innovative way for our ticket buyers to experience these stellar productions by watching a recording of the performance from the comfort of their own home. Patrons will be provided exclusive access to a recording of the performance through a partner that will also allow them access to their extensive library of productions, ranging from Shakespearean classics to modern musicals and dramas. We are still working on bringing this all together, but ticket holders will receive an email from A.C.T. with directions on how to access the recording sometime next week."

Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles today announced the cancellation of performances of The Book of Mormon, The Antipodes, and Block Party at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre.

All performances of Hamilton at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre have been suspended until March 31, including the March 12 performance.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre has also put performances of School Girls; or, The African Mean Girls Play on hiatus through April 5. It was scheduled to start March 19. It has canceled future performances of Culture Clash (Still) in America, which now played its last show on March 11.

San Diego's Old Globe will postpone its productions of Little Women and Faceless until further notice.

American Conservatory Theatre has canceled its productions of Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show and Qui Nguyen's Poor Yella Rednecks: Vietgone Part 2.
