Predictions: What Will Win the Best Revival Tony Awards in 2018?

In our final list of predictions, TheaterMania's critics take on the most competitive categories of the year.

Best Revival of a Musical

THE NOMINEES:
My Fair Lady
Once on This Island
Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel

David Gordon:

Will win: My Fair Lady
Should win: Once on This Island
Lincoln Center Theater's revival of My Fair Lady is just glorious. They'll win the prize — deservedly — though Michael Arden's reimagining of Once on This Island, with found instruments, gender-swapped characters, and an actual sandbox as the set, has the creative edge.

Hayley Levitt:

Will win: My Fair Lady
Should win: My Fair Lady
I will be the dissenting opinion and say that My Fair Lady deserves the recognition I predict is coming its way. Once on This Island is my emotional runner runner-up, but where that show wears its creativity on its sleeve, My Fair Lady subtly rebuilds a classic from the ground up and does it so beautifully.

Zachary Stewart:

Will win: Carousel
Should win: Once on This Island
This is the most competitive, unpredictable category this year, so I won't be surprised in the slightest if I'm wrong; but I think voters will break for a glorious-sounding, high-flying revival of a flawed yet groundbreaking musical (‘'Carousel'') over a near-perfect revival of a near-perfect musical (My Fair Lady). Still, if you're looking for a revival that truly reimagines the source material, look no further than Once on This Island, which I fear too many voters have forgotten since it opened last fall.

Best Revival of a Play

THE NOMINEES:
Angels in America
Edward Albee's Three Tall Women
Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh
Lobby Hero
Travesties

David Gordon:

Will win: Angels in America
Should win: Angels in America
It's a production for the ages — and I'd gladly sit through all 8 hours again (and I plan to).

Hayley Levitt:

Will win: Angels in America
Should win: Angels in America
It was a very good year for play revivals, but when it's done right, nothing can beat Angels in America. Marianne Elliott's revival is a piece of theatrical history, and it has earned its place in the record books.

Zachary Stewart:

Will win: Angels in America
Should win: Angels in America
Sometimes, bigger is better. In this case, voters will reward the producers of Angels in America for mounting an elegant and timely revival of an American classic. It will beat the excellent revival of Three Tall Women if only because after seven-and-a-half hours, we feel like we've been on an epic journey with the show that needs to be commemorated in some way.
