Mint Theater Extends Teresa Deevy Anthology The Suitcase Under the Bed
The program consists of four short plays — three world premieres, one U.S. premiere — by the Irish playwright.
The Mint Theater Company announced that it will extend The Suitcase Under the Bed — four short plays by Irish playwright Teresa Deevy done in one performance — until September 30. Currently in previews at Beckett Theatre at Theatre Row, opening night is set for August 24.
The show is a continuation of the Mint's efforts to reintroduce Deevy's work to the world. Not only has the company previously produced three of her full-length plays — Wife to James Whelan in 2010, Temporal Powers in 2011, and Katie Roche in 2013 — but they have published her work in two volumes of collections titled Teresa Deevy Reclaimed, the second of which has just been published. According to a press release, "Together, these two books will have a significant impact on Deevy scholarship for years to come, greatly adding to the understanding and appreciation of this important Irish playwright: a rare and courageous woman, who pursued a career in the theater despite significant obstacles, including the loss of her hearing when she was a university student."
The Suitcase Under the Bed consists of The King of Spain's Daughter (U.S. premiere), Strange Birth (world premiere), Holiday House (world premiere), and In the Cellar of My Friend (world premiere). Directed by Mint artistic director Jonathan Bank, the cast for all four plays features Ellen Adair, Gina Costigan, Sarah Nicole Deaver, Cynthia Mace, Aidan Redmond, Colin Ryan, and A.J. Shively.
The creative team includes Vicki R. Davis (scenic design), Andrea Varga (costume design), Zach Blane (lighting design), Jane Shaw (sound design), and Stephanie Klapper, CSA (casting).
