On Tuesday, November 8, the Broadway premiere of David Ives’ Venus in Fur opened at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. The two person cast stars Nina Arianda and Hugh Dancy. Walter Bobbie has directed the production.
Opening night guests included Sierra Boggess, Eric Bogosian, Christie Brinkley, Michael Cerveris, Nilo Cruz, Claire Danes, Colman Domingo, Ari Gold, Adriane Lenox, Kathleen Marshall, Gretchen Mol, Phyllis Newman, David Pittu, Carrie Preston, Mercedes Ruehl, Benjamin Walker, and Rutina Wesley.
The play follows Vanda, a preternaturally talented young actress determined to land the lead in a new play based on the classic erotic novel, Venus in Fur. Her emotionally charged audition for Thomas, the play’s adapter/director, becomes an electrifying game of cat and mouse blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex.
