Philip Dawkins's The Gentleman Caller Opens Off-Broadway

Abingdon Theatre Company opened the first production of its 25th anniversary main stage season, the New York premiere of Philip Dawkins's The Gentleman Caller, last night at the Cherry Lane Theatre. The show is set to run through May 26.

Daniel K. Isaac (Billions) plays William Inge and Juan Francisco Villa (Oedipus El Rey) plays Tennessee Williams in the production, which is directed by Abingdon Theatre Company artistic director Tony Speciale. The creative team includes Sara C. Walsh (scenic design), Hunter Kaczorowski (costume design), Zach Blane (lighting design), and Christian Frederickson (sound design, original music).

The Gentleman Caller is described as follows: "Although now regarded as two of history's finest American playwrights, back in 1944, William Inge and Tennessee Williams hadn't yet experienced anything close to success. The Gentleman Caller takes us back in time, before the Chicago premiere of The Glass Menagerie. Inge, a dissatisfied newspaper critic, invites Williams to his St. Louis apartment for an interview. This sexy, fraught rendezvous sparks a relationship, which radically alters the course of their lives and the American Theatre."
