The opera, one of Mozart’s earliest successes, starts tonight.
Lucio Silla, composed by Mozart when he was just 16 years old, begins performances tonight at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.
The opera centers on the eponymous character, Lucio Silla, the dictator of Rome. Silla seeks to marry Giunia, who is engaged to Cecilio. Cecilio, who is banished from the city, has secretly returned to reunite with Giunia. Once there, Cecilio engages in conspiracies against Silla, even as Silla attempts to exert his power and influence to force Giunia to become his wife. When Cecilio’s conspiracy fails, everything begins to unravel in the web of deceit, love, and intrigue.
Andreas Mitisek directs the Mozart classic, which features Ryan MacPherson as Lucio Silla, Valerie Vinzant as Celia, Maeve Höglund as Guinia, Christine Arand as Cecilio, and Ava Pine as Lucio Cinna.
Francesco Milioto conducts the Chicago Philharmonic.
Performances will run through October 4.
