The concert production runs through March 4.
The York Theatre Company's concert presentation of Subways Are for Sleeping has released its first photos from its current run which began February 24 and plays through March 4 at Saint Peter's. This limited run is the last show of the winter 2018 Musicals in Mufti series devoted to composer Jule Styne, who wrote the music for the 1961 musical, with book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, suggested by the book by Edmund G. Love.
Karl Josef Co, David Engel (La Cage aux Folles), Beth Glover (Take Me Along), David Josefsberg (Waitress), Alyse Alan Louis (Amélie), Kathryn McCreary (The Phantom of the Opera), Gerry McIntyre (Once on This Island), Gina Milo (Les Misérables), Eric William Morris (Mamma Mia!), and Kilty Reidy (The Drowsy Chaperone) will star. Stuart Ross will direct, with music direction by David Hancock Turner (Desperate Measures).
The creative team includes Graham Kindred (lighting designer), Kevin Maloof (production manager), Shanna Allison (production stage manager), Chris Steckel (assistant stage manager), and Geoff Josselson, CSA (casting director).
Originally produced by David Merrick, Subways Are for Sleeping "tells the tale of Angie, a reporter sent to get the scoop on a segment of NYC society — a group of well-dressed homeless people sleeping in the New York subway system — that lives by their own rules. Going undercover, Angie learns how the carefree other half lives and begins to see there might be another way to experience the world. Subways Are for Sleeping is perhaps best known for an infamous publicity stunt in which Merrick invited New Yorkers with the same names as some of the prominent theatre critics at the time, using their favorable reviews in a print ad."
Now in its 22nd year, Musicals in Mufti is a series of musical theater gems performed in simply staged, book-in-hand concerts. Hallelujah, Baby! and Bar Mitzvah Boy, both also featuring music by Jule Styne, were the previous shows this season.
