Neame began his career as a cinematographer, and later a screenwriter and producer, most notably working on the film adaptations of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirti and Brief Encounter, as well as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist.
He began directing in 1950 with Golden Salamander.He helmed the film versions of the plays The Chalk Garden, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and First Monday in October, along with the 1970 musical Scrooge starring Albert Finney,.and the now-classic 1972 disaster film The Poseidon Adventure.
Neame was awarded a CBE for his contribution to the film industry in 1996.
