Tony winner Billy Crystal (700 Sundays) is at work on a stage musical version of his 1992 film Mr. Saturday Night. Crystal revealed the news during a recent interview on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast.

"We're making it a musical for the Nederlanders, who loved the movie," Crystal told Maron. "[They] came to us and said this could be a musical…We've written the first draft [and] had a reading the other day. It totally has the spirit of the film and it could be really exciting." Crystal cowrote the film with Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz, who have repeated their duties for the stage version.

Crystal also directed, starred, and produced the film, which follows the rise and fall of a self-destructive stand-up comedian named Buddy Young Jr. He revealed that he may also star in the stage production, for which there's no timeline. "I probably will," Crystal told Maron. "I haven't totally committed yet."

A timeline, creative team, and cast have not yet been announced.
