Angela Gheorghiu Withdraws from Metropolitan Opera’s Carmen

| New York City |

February 5, 2010

Internationally renowned singer Angela Gheorghiu has withdrawn from the April 28 and May 1 performances of the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, directed by Richard Eyre, according to The New York Times. She will be replaced by Kate Aldrich.

Gheorgiu had originally been announced to sing in all of the performances of the opera, which opened on December 31. However, she withdrew from the first six performances, since she did not want to appear with her husband, Roberto Alagna, who was playing Don Jose, after the pair encountered marital difficulties. Elina Garanca took over the role, which is now being sung Olga Borodina.
