While Gibson gained fame in television, he appeared on Broadway in My Mother, My Father and Me and the City Encores! production of Rogers and Hart’s A Connecticut Yankee.
Gibson’s many films included The Nutty Professor, The Long Goodbye, Nashville, Health, The Blues Brothers, and Magnolia; he also had a five-season stint as Judge Clark Brown on ABC’s Boston Legal and provided the voice of newspaperman Bob Jenkins on the animated series King of the Hill.
He is survived by his three sons, Jon, Charles, and James.
