Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks to Star in Sparkle Film Set for August 17 Release

The film musical Sparkle will be released on August 17.
The film, which is directed by Salim Akil, and his wife, Mara Brock Akil, tells the story of three sisters who go from their Harlem church choir and become a successful girl group, but have unhappy personal lives.
Former In the Heights star and American Idol champion Jordin Sparks plays the title role and the late Whitney Houston plays her mother. Both performers also sing in the film.
The cast also includes CeeLo Green, Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Omari Hardwick, and Derek Luke.
