Holly Hughes, Stephen Karam, Tony Kushner Among GLAAD Media Award Nominees

Nominations for the 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards have been announced. The awards recognize outstanding images of the LGBT community in news coverage and entertainment media. Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 24, at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square; in Los Angeles on April 21 at the Westin Bonaventure; and in San Francisco on June 2 at San Francisco Marriott Marquis.

Broadway and Off-Broadway nominees include Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott; Maple & Vine by Jordan Harrison; The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures by Tony Kushner; Sons of the Prophet by Stephen Karam; and Unnatural Acts: Harvard’s Secret Court of 1920 conceived by Tony Speciale.

In the “Outstanding New York Theater: Off-Off Broadway” category, nominees consist of Southern Comfort, with book and lyrics by Dan Collins, music by Julianne Wick Davis; The Dog and Pony Show (Bring Your Own Pony) by Holly Hughes; The Escape Artist, with book by John Kelly, songs by John Kelly & Carol Lipnik; The Momentum by Boo Killebrew, Geoffrey Decas O’Donnell & Jordan Seavey; and She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen.

Outstanding Los Angeles Theater nominees include No Word in Guyanese for Me by Wendy Graf; Killer Queen: The Story of Paco the Pink Pounder, by Peter Griggs; House of the Rising Son, by Tom Jacobson; Bonded, by Donald Jolly; and Who’s Your Daddy?, by Johnny O’Callaghan.

Nominated for Outstanding Film – Wide Release are Albert Nobbs, starring Glenn Close and Janet McTeer; Beginners, starring Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor, and J. Edgar, which has theater veterans like Josh Hamilton and Judi Dench in its cast.

Among the television nominees are Grey’s Anatomy and Torchwood: Miracle Day for Outstanding Drama series, and Glee, Modern Family, and The Big C for Outstanding Comedy series – with all of those shows prominently featuring theater veterans.

In addition, Dancing with the Stars and The Glee Project — both of which have featured theater artists – are nominated in the Outstanding Reality Program category.
