The season will open with the West Coast premiere of Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher (January 27-February 3), featuring a haunting score to accompany Edgar Allan Poe's macabre tale. Ken Cazan will direct. Next, LBO will stage the U.S. premiere of Gabriela Ortiz and Rubén Ortiz-Torres' Unicamente la Verdad (Only the Truth) (March 24 and 30), a controversial work dealing with love, drugs, and betrayal along the US-Mexican border.
A double bill featuring Stewart Copeland's Tell-Tale Heart, a version of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story, and Michael Gordon's Van Gogh, based on Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo, (May 11-19) will be up next. The season will come to a close with Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch's Macbeth (June 15-23), which directly from the original Shakespeare text.
