Peter Brook, Simon Stephens, et al. Set for World Stages London Festival

Additional productions for the World Stages London festival, to run in venues throughout London in spring 2012, have been announced. Young Vic artistic director David Lan and arts consultant Nicola Thorold are overseeing the project.

Among the shows that will be slated for the event is Jung Chang’s Wild Swans, to run April 13-May 13. Adapted by Alexandra Woods and directed by Sacha Wares, the show, set in China and presented by .the Young Vic, American Repertory Theater and Actors Touring Company, examines the early days of Communist hope and struggle, through the chaos and confusion of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, to the birth of a superpower.


In addition the Lyric Hammersmith’s production of Simon Stephens’ thriller about human trafficking, Three Kingdoms (May 3 – May 19), Peter Brook’s production of The Suit (May 19 – June 16), which is adapted from Can Themba’s fable, and Tanika Gupta’s Wah! Wah! Girls – A British Bollywood Musical (May 24 – June 23) will be part of the Festival.

The international festival will also include, as previously reported, Babel, which is based on the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and will run May 8 – May 20 and will feature a cast of 500 professional and amateur performers.

Other productions — with dates yet to be slated — include Amir Nizar Zuabi’s The Beloved, a reexamination of the biblical story of Abraham, Yoruba, a look at the West African culture’s transformation through the centurys, to be directed by Rufus Norris, and a new community opera project created by Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton, that will be presented simultaneously in London, Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town.
