Young Tony Nominee Sydney Lucas Says Goodbye to Broadway Musical Fun Home
Sydney Lucas, who received a 2015 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Small Alison in Fun Home at the Circle in the Square Theatre, plays her final performance in that musical today. Lucas was part of early readings and workshops of the Pulitzer finalist with music by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. Lucas appeared in the Public Theater premiere in 2013 and garnered acclaim for her interpretation of the coming-of-age tune "Ring of Keys," which she performed on the 2015 Tony Awards telecast.
Lucas' understudy, Gabriella Pizzolo, will take over the role of Small Alison beginning Tuesday, October 6.
Lucas made her Broadway debut in the musical, a performance that in addition to her Tony nomination earned her a 2015 Theatre World Award. She also received a 2014 Drama Desk Award nomination for her work in the show's off-Broadway production at the Public. Pizzolo made her Broadway debut as the title role in Matilda The Musical.
Inspired by Alison Bechdel's graphic novel-memoir of the same title, Fun Home follows the real-life Bechdel's journey to accept the death of her stern, closeted father, Bruce, while coming to terms with her own sexuality. The production won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, along with Tonys for Best Score (Tesori and Kron), Best Book (Kron), Best Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris), and Best Director of a Musical (Sam Gold).
Cerveris leads the cast alongside 2015 Tony nominees Judy Kuhn, Beth Malone, and Emily Skeggs, as well as Roberta Colindrez, Zell Steele Morrow, Joel Perez, Oscar Williams, Lauren Patten, Marrick Smith, Jim Stanek, and Nicole Van Giesen. The production began Broadway performances March 27 and opened April 19.
