Warner Bros. Closing $50 Million Deal for In the Heights Movie Rights

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is closing a $50 million deal for the film rights to In the Heights. The rights had been previously been up for auction after creators Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes took them back from the Weinstein Company.

Jon M. Chu is slated to direct the In the Heights film. His previous credits include Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. He recently completed work on Crazy Rich Asians for Warner Bros.

Featuring a book by Hudes and music and lyrics by Miranda, In the Heights tells the story of a vibrant community in Manhattan's Washington Heights. The show won the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics (Miranda), Best Choreography (Andy Blankenbuehler), and Best Orchestrations (Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman). The original cast recording won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
