Lin-Manuel Miranda, Quiara Alegría Hudes Regain Film Rights to In the Heights

According to reports by Deadline, the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes's Tony-winning musical In the Heights is no longer the property of the Weinstein Company. The rights have returned to the musical's creators, which they demanded back after accusations emerged against Harvey Weinstein about numerous sexual assaults.
Deadline reports that the rights have quietly reverted to Miranda and Hudes, allowing it to avoid the Weinstein Company's bankruptcy proceedings. Disney and Warner Bros. are said to both be possible candidates to pick up the project. Miranda composed songs for Disney's animated film Moana and just completed work starring in Disney's upcoming film Mary Poppins Returns. Jon M. Chu, who will direct the In the Heights film, recently completed work on Crazy Rich Asians for Warner Bros.
Featuring a book by Hudes and music and lyrics by Miranda, In the Heights tells the story of a vibrant community in Manhattan's Washington Heights. The show won the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Music and Lyrics (Miranda), Best Choreography (Andy Blankenbuehler), and Best Orchestrations (Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman). The original cast recording won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
