Sarah Stiles, Andréa Burns, and More Added to Lineup of Broadway Stands Up for Freedom
Additional performers have been announced for the annual Broadway Stands Up for Freedom concert, a benefit for the New York Civil Liberties Union to be held July 20 at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
Newly announced performers are Sarah Stiles (Hand to God), Rachel Resheff (Fish in the Dark), Andréa Burns (On Your Feet!), Ashley Park (The King and I), Joe Carroll (Cinderella), Malcolm Merriweather, Charles Duke and Brennan Hall, Matt Gould, Griffin Matthews, and Christina Bianco (Application Pending). Tony Kushner serves as honorary chair.
They join 2015 Tony Award winners Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I) and Michael Cerveris (Fun Home) with his band Loose Cattle, as well as 2015 Tony Award nominees Judy Kuhn (Fun Home), Beth Malone (Fun Home), Brandon Uranowitz (An American in Paris), and Steven Boyer (Hand to God).
The lineup also features Tony nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger (The Glass Menagerie), Tony nominee Montego Glover (It Shoulda Been You), Sirius/XM Radio personality Seth Rudetsky, Kate Ferber, Grace McLean, Shaina Taub, and Liana Stampur with the Clinton Curtis Band.
The performance will also showcase teenage winners of the NYCLU’s Freedom of Expression contest, which invites New York City public schools students to speak their minds on important civil liberties issues in their lives.
Susan Blackwell ([title of show]) returns as host, with 2015 Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) as the evening's keynote speaker. Peter Flynn will direct with Paul Staroba as musical director. The benefit will also feature an original video by Andrew and Celia Keenan-Bolger.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the NYCLU’s youth programs, including its work with LGBT teenagers; its Teen Activist Project, which engages New York City youth as organizers and peer educators on civil rights and civil liberties issues; and its work to stop overly aggressive policing and zero-tolerance discipline in the city’s public schools.
