
Porchlight Music Theatre has announced its 2011-2012 season, which is focused on building on past growth while looking forward to a new era for the company.
The season is set to open with Stephen Sondheim’s musical revue Putting it Together (September-October 16). Devised by Sondheim and Olivier Award winner Julia McKenzie, Putting it Together is the emotional story of the entangled relationships of five guests attending a Manhattan cocktail party as they are confronted with the troubles of marriage, infidelity, and divorce. The production includes songs from many of Sondheim’s original musicals and films and will be choreographed and directed by Brenda Didier.
Also this season, Porchlight Music Theatre will present The Chicago premiere of A Catered Affair (February-April 1), directed by Nick Bowling. This musical, with a book by Harvey Fierstein, is based on both the 1956 film written by Gore Vidal The Catered Affair and the original 1955 teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky. It is a bittersweet reflection on the complexities of relationships between husbands and wives and parents and children.
Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick… BOOM! (April 27-June 10) will close the season with the semi-autobiographical story of Jon, an aspiring composer anxiously approaching his 30th birthday. tick, tick…BOOM! features a dynamic pop-rock score blended with traditional musical theater styles.
