Last night, the Snapple Theatre Center named one of its two performing spaces after the late actor Jerry Orbach — the original star of The Fantasticks, which is now playing there in revival. Here’s Orbach’s widow, Broadway veteran Elaine Cancilla-Orbach, taking in the new signage.
Tony Award winners Christian Hoff and Karen Ziemba were among the stars who joined Mrs. Orbach for this extremely special event.
Here’s Sam Waterston, who co-starred with Orbach on NBC’s Law & Order for many years, with actress-producer Tamara Tunie, a cast member of Law & Order: SVU.
Also on hand for the dedication were such great Broadway stars as Bebe Neuwirth…
…Kelly Bishop, who originated the role of Sheila in A Chorus Line (a role later played by Neuwirth)…
…Tony winner Len Cariou, who may soon return to the New York stage in the musical version of Grumpy Old Men…
…the legendary Celeste Holm with her husband, singer Frank Basile…
…and the lovely Anita Gillette, who appeared opposite Orbach in the original Broadway production of Carnival!.
One of the past week’s starriest sightings was the reunion of four-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury and composer-lyricist Jerry Herman, which occurred on Monday night at a screening of the soon-to-air PBS documentary Words and Music by Jerry Herman at the Paley Center for Media (formerly known as the Museum of Television & Radio). Lansbury won two of her Tonys for the Herman shows Mame and Dear World.
Meanwhile, back at the Snapple Theater Center, Fantasticks star Anthony Fedorov got a visit from fellow American Idol contestant Kevin Covais.
On Thursday, June 14, the Atlantic Theater Company opened its second-ever musical 10 Million Miles, based on the songs of Patty Griffin. Here is the show’s very talented cast: Matthew Morrison, Mare Winningham, Irene Molloy, and Skipp Sudduth.
Also on hand for the festivities were the show’s director, Michael Mayer, who won his first Tony Award just four days earlier for the Broadway production of Spring Awakening (the Atlantic’s first musical)…
…Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, who will have an upcoming season devoted to his work by New York’s revered Signature Theater Company…
…and Tony winner Randy Graff, who heads out to the Muny in St. Louis later this summer to star in a revival of Herman’s Hello, Dolly! (Graff, by the way, is married to 10 Million Miles musical director Tim Weil.)
Pirate Queen star Stephanie J. Block had her caricature presented at Sardi’s for addition to the restaurant’s hallowed walls. She was joined by several of her castmates from the recently closed show, including Marcus Chait and Linda Balgord. Block’s next gig is singing the national anthem at Shea Stadium on June 25!
