Old Globe Season to Feature Jay O. Sanders as King Lear

San Diego’s Old Globe has announced its 2027 season, featuring five world premieres, a West Coast premiere, three San Diego premieres, and two Shakespeare productions, including King Lear starring Jay O. Sanders.

The season will open with the West Coast premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire’s comedy The Balusters, directed by Steve H. Broadnax III. Running January 30-February 28, the play takes place during a series of homeowners association meetings that spiral into battles.

Next up is August Rush: A New Musical, a world premiere engagement running March 27-May 2. Based on the Warner Bros. film, the musical features a book by Nick Blaemire, music inspired by the film, and additional new music by Blaemire, Van Hughes, Tom Kitt, and others. Kitt also serves as music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger. Kathleen Marshall directs.

The Globe will then present the world premiere of Holy Moses, A Comedy of Biblical Proportions, written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen and directed by Greenberg, May 22-June 20. The comedy follows a community theater troupe whose production of the story of Moses goes disastrously off the rails.

The mainstage season continues with Mexodus by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, directed by David Mendizábal, July 2-August 1. A second world premiere musical, yet to be announced, will close out the mainstage season in the fall.

The Globe’s Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre season begins with the world premiere of Jake by Susan Yassky, directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch, February 20-March 14. The play follows two women dealing with the death of a man named Jake.

Lauren Yee’s Mother Russia, a comedy set in post-Soviet St. Petersburg, follows April 17-May 9. Three-headed Monster, a world premiere by JuCoby Johnson and directed by H. Adam Harris, runs June 5-June 27. The season also includes Jeffrey Hatcher’s new adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s Rope’s End, the thriller that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, directed by May Adrales, and Fancy Dancer, written and performed by Larissa FastHorse and directed by Chay Yew.

The Old Globe’s Summer Shakespeare Festival will feature As You Like It, directed by Awoye Timpo, June 15-July 11, followed by King Lear, starring Jay O. Sanders and directed by Globe artistic director Barry Edelstein, August 10-September 5.
