Laura Benanti and Michael Cerveris will lead the cast of Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room or the vibrator play, to be presented by Lincoln Center Theater at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre, beginning October 22, with an opening date of November 19. Les Waters will direct the production.
This comedy is set at the dawn of the age of electricity, and centers on a doctor (Cerveris) and his wife (Benanti) and how his experimental therapy affects their entire household. The play had its world premiere this past season at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, under Waters’ direction. The cast will also include Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Maria Dizzia, Thomas Jay Ryan, Wendy Rich Stetson and Chandler Williams.
This production marks the Broadway debut for Ruhl, who has won numerous honors, including a MacArthur “Genius” grant. Her other plays include The Clean House, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Passion Play, and Eurydice.
