
L. Peter Callender has been appointed artistic director of San Francisco’s African-American Shakespeare Company. He will assume the position officially in May 2010.
Callender has worked professionally as an actor, writer, and director for over 30 years. He received his formal training in theater at the Juilliard School in New York City. On Broadway, he appeared in the original production of Craig Lucas’ Prelude to a Kiss, and other New York credits include the Public Theater’s 1989 production of Twelfth Night, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, and George C. Wolfe’s staging of The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
An associate artist at California Shakespeare Theater, Callender’s Bay Area and regional credits include roles at Berkeley Repertory Theater, Aurora Theatre Company, American Conservatory Theater, Lorraine Hansberry Theater, Magic Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse, and Arena Stage, among others.
African-American Shakespeare Company opens its 15th anniversary season in December with Cinderella (December 10-27) and will close its season with a modern-day interpretation of Shakespeare’s Othello (March 12-28).
