
John Malkovich will perform The Infernal Comedy on May 14 as part of the the 17th International Istanbul Theater Festival, which continues through June 10. The piece, written and directed by Michael Sturminger, features a series of monologues paired with operatic arias, and is based on the true story of celebrated Austrian author and notorious murderer Jack Unterweger.
Other pieces in the Festival include a new interpretation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, created by Andreas Kriegenburg and presented by the German theater collective Münchner Kammerspiele; Giorgio Strehler’s staging of Carlo Goldoni’s Holiday Trilogy, presented by Piccolo Teatro di Milano; Guy Cassiers’s Sunken Red, an adaptation of Jeroen Brouwers’ autobiographical novel, presented by Toneelhuis & ro theater; and René Pollesch’s Cinecittà Aperta / Ruhr Trilogy, Part 2, which explores urban topography and commoditization and is offered by Germany’s Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
Three pieces from Japan will be represented at the Festival, including Tadashi Suzuki’s revival of Elektra, the New National Theater of Japan’s production of The Rite of Spring, and Ko Murobishi’s solo dance Quicksilver. Among the other dance offerings at the Festival will be program choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui from London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
