The winners of the Connecticut Critics Circle Awards have been announced.
Among the top winners was Pop!, which debuted at Yale Rep and features book and lyrics by Maggie-Kate Coleman and music by Anna K. Jacobs. The show won as outstanding musical and also garnered awards for performer Brian Charles Rooney and lighting designer Kevin Adams, who tied with Robert Wierzel for his lighting design for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn at Hartford Stage.
In other musical categories, Mark Lamos won for his direction of She Loves Me at Westport Country Playhouse and performer Jenn Gambatese and choreographer Noah Racey won for their work on Annie Get Your Gun at Goodspeed Musicals.
In dramatic categories, Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed, seen at Yale Rep, won as outstanding play while the Hartford Stage production of Horton Foote’s The Orphans’ Home Cycle won numerous prizes, including a special award “for extraordinary theatrical experience.” Other honors for this show went to actor Bill Heck, director Michael Wilson, and scenic designers Jeff Cowie and David Barber. This theater’s production also garnered a best ensemble prize for the cast members of Gee’s Bendwhile the award for best actress went to Nilaja Sun for her solo show No Child…, seen at Long Wharf Theatre.
