B.D. Wong will reprise his Tony Award-winning role in David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly in a special 20th anniversary reading and celebration of the play, to be held Monday, December 8 at New York University’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Film Center beginning at 7:30 pm.
The play is inspired by a true story of a French diplomat who failed to recognize that his twenty year old affair with an alluring Chinese actress had actually been with a male Chinese spy.
The reading is part of the 11th annual Asian American Literary Awards Ceremony, produced by the Asian American Writers Workshop. Following the reading, Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis will lead a discussion with Hwang and Wong about the play, and its contribution to Asian American culture.
The evening will also honor the winners of the AAWW’s literary awards, which include Mohsin Hamid, Vijay Prashad, Sun Yung Shin, and the Members’ Choice winner, to be announced at the ceremony.
