Helder Guimarães's The Hope Theory to Make Off-Broadway Debut

Oscar nominee Frank Marshall will present the off-Broadway premiere of illusionist and storyteller Helder Guimarães’s The Hope Theory, following a sold-out world premiere at the Geffen Playhouse.

The Hope Theory begins performances September 9 at New York City Center – Stage II, where it will play a limited engagement through December 6.

Directed and produced by Marshall, The Hope Theory combines Guimarães’ signature sleight-of-hand illusions with stories drawn from his experience immigrating to the United States from Portugal and pursuing a career in magic. Guimarães arrived in America at age 29, facing the cultural and professional challenges of establishing a new life in an unfamiliar country. The resulting solo performance explores immigration, ambition, reinvention, and the idea of continuing to pursue a future that cannot yet be seen.

Guimarães is a World Champion of Magic, Parlor Magician of the Year, Allan Slaight Sharing Wonder recipient, and Ascanio Prize winner. His previous stage creations include Nothing to Hide, Borrowed Time, Verso, The Invisible Tango, The Future, and The Present.

Marshall is a producer and director whose film credits include Back to the Future, The Sixth Sense, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He has produced films in the Indiana Jones, Jason Bourne, and Jurassic World franchises and directed Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story, which won the Grammy for Best Music Film.

The creative team includes scenic designer François-Pierre Couture, lighting designer Martha Carter, sound designer James Grabowski, composer Jeff Beal, and dramaturg Amy Levinson.
