Hamilton Switches Theater for Puerto Rico Engagement

Citing security concerns, the Puerto Rico engagement of Hamilton has switched theaters. The musical will now play the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center (Bellas Artes), January 11-27, instead of the newly rebuilt Teatro UPR, where performances were scheduled to begin on January 8.

"During this year of preparations, Hamilton could not have had better allies than UPR Rio Piedras Campus' Chancellor Dr. Luis Ferrao and his team. They have made the impossible, possible," said Luis A. Miranda Jr. "While we believed in the safety of the campus, some have expressed the possibility of holding rallies outside the theater to draw attention to their causes. We believe in the right to peacefully assemble and we believe in freedom of speech. But in the case of an unforeseen emergency, our Hamilton production security alone would not be able to provide security to cast, crew, patrons and the UPR community."

"We will do everything in our power to make this a seamless transition for ticket holders and for everyone in Puerto Rico who has welcomed Hamilton with open arms," producers Jeffrey Seller said.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the musical and originated the role of Alexander Hamilton on Broadway, will reprise the role for the limited engagement in Puerto Rico.

With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, the musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War, and was the new nation's first Treasury Secretary. The musical won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Score, Book of a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Choreography, and Orchestrations.
