Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman is composing original music for A.C.T.’s production of Athol Fugard’s drama Blood Knot, February 8-March 9. The production, which will open officially on February 13, will be directed by Charles Randolph Wright.

Fugard’s play is set in South Africa in the early 1960s and focuses on two brothers — one of whom can pass for white — who lead an apparently stable life until they become pen pals with a white woman. Steven Anthony Jones and Jack Willis, both company veterans, will play the brothers.

The design team includes Alexander V. Nichol (sets), Sandra Woodall (costumes), Kathy Perkins (lighting), and Dan Moses Schreier (sound). Randolph-Wright’s many directing credits include Guys and Dolls, Tartuffe, and Blithe Spirit, as well as the films Mama, I Want to Sing! and Preaching to the Choir. He is also the author of the plays Blue and Cuttin’ Up.

Chapman’s albums include Tracy Chapman, Crossroads, Let It Rain, and Where You Live. This production marks her first time writing specifically for the theater.
