Flashback Friday: Ann Miller Sets a High Bar for the Dames at Sea

The musical made it to America’s televisions before making it to Broadway.

The first-ever Broadway revival of Dames at Sea opened last night at the Helen Hayes Theatre. The camp-filled musical about a newcomer's rapid rise to fame premiered off-off-Broadway in 1966, prophetically led by the soon-to-be stage star Bernadette Peters. There's not much video evidence of Peter's historic performance as the fresh-faced tapper Ruby (now played on Broadway by Eloise Kropp), but we can share a clip from the 1971 television film, starring Ann-Margret as Ruby and Ann Miller as her seasoned foe Mona Kent (currently played by Lesli Mergherita). Take a look as Miller's fancy footwork in the show's opening number, "Wall Street."
