Hartford Stage has announced its plans for its 2010 SummerStage Broadway Legends series as well as four of the works that will be produced during the theater’s 2010-2011 season.
The first summertime offering at the theater will be Chita Rivera: My Broadway (June 22-27). This evening of song and dance will feature the performer delivering songs from her legendary Broadway career. An Evening With Ben Vereen (July 6-11) includes a tribute to Broadway, Frank Sinatra and a special homage to Sammy Davis, Jr.
The theater’s mainstage season will begin with Sheila’s Day (July 22 – August 15), conceived and written by Duma Ndlova and co-created by Mbongeni Ngema with additional material by Ebony Jo-Ann. Ricardo Khan, working from Ngema’s original staging, will direct this musical drama about two domestic workers from two different sides of the world.
Also confirmed for Hartford Stage’s 2010-2011 season are Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps; August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, directed by Hana Sharif; and the world premiere of Michael Kramer’s Divine Rivalry. Michael Wilson will direct this latter work, which looks at a little-known painting competition that brings Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci, and Machiavelli together.
Casting and creative teams, along with additional productions and scheduling information will be announced shortly.
