Broadway-Bound Revival of Can-Can Announces Stars

New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse has announced the stars to headline its fall production of the Broadway-bound revival of Abe Burrows and Cole Porter's Can-Can. Leading the cast as Parisian café owner La Môme Pistache will be Tony nominee Kate Baldwin (Big Fish), performing opposite Jason Danieley (Curtains) as Judge Aristide Forestier.

Set in 1893, the musical follows Pistache (Baldwin), who decides to feature the scandalous Can-Can dance in her dance hall. Judge Forestier (Danieley), however, threatens to close down her establishment if she defies the law.

Can-Can debuted on Broadway in 1953 and starred Lilo and Peter Cookson as Pistache and Aristide, with direction by Burrows. The new production features direction by David Lee (Frasier, Cheers) and choreography by Patti Colombo, with a recrafted script by Joel Fields (Ugly Betty) and David Lee. The musical includes several of composer Cole Porter's classic tunes including "I Love Paris," "C'est Magnifique," "It's All Right With Me" and more.

"With full permission of the Burrows and Porter estates the book has been updated without being modernized," says director David Lee. "Can-Can is still set in 1893 — and although 90% rewritten it retains all of Abe Burrows' original characters and intent."

"Can-Can hasn't been revived for the Broadway stage in over 30 years," added Paper Mill Artistic Director Mark S. Hoebee, "so we're thrilled to launch the next Broadway revival here at Paper Mill Playhouse."

The production will run from October 1-26 with an official opening set for October 5.
