Geno Segers will no longer join the Broadway cast of Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

As reported on Wednesday, Segers was slated to take over the role of Hades in the long-running Broadway musical alongside a new group of principals including Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes and Amber Iman as Persephone.

But resurfaced social media videos Segers made about transgender people, including one in which he speculated that Americans would soon begin identifying as dogs to obtain discount airfare, prompted an online backlash to the casting.

A statement from the producers reads, “The producers of Hadestown and Geno Segers have mutually agreed that Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly.”

The new cast takes over September 1.
