James Monroe Iglehart, who won a 2015 Tony Award for the role of Genie is Disney's Aladdin, joins the cast of Broadway's Hamilton today, April 14, in the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. During the same performance, Brian d'Arcy James, who originated the role of King George III during the show's 2015 Public Theater engagement, will return to the throne, as well.
With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War, and was the new nation's first Treasury Secretary. The production plays at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The musical won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Score, Book of a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Choreography, and Orchestrations, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
