The play about a feminist consciousness-raising group in Ohio in the 1970s debuted off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company before transferring to Broadway last fall.

Bess Wohl’s Liberation has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
The play is about a woman looking back at her mother’s participation in a women’s consciousness-raising group in 1970s Ohio, and how messy reality rarely lives up to our highest aspirations. TheaterMania’s Rachel Graham called it “funny, emotional, enraging, and inspiring,” in her review of the Broadway run.
Liberation debuted last February off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company and transferred to Broadway in the fall. While it closed February 1, it is widely considered a strong contender for the Tony Award for Best Play. The nominations will be announced tomorrow.
The other finalists the Pulitzer board considered were Nazareth Hassan’s Bowl EP and Talene Monahon Meet the Cartozians. Both plays performed off-Broadway earlier this season.
The Pulitzer Prize for Drama has been regularly awarded since 1918 to recognize outstanding American playwriting. Recent winners include Branden Jacobs-Jenkins for Purpose, Eboni Booth for Primary Trust, and Sanaz Toossi for English.
