The legendary musical will leap its way to Hollywood.
With a new Broadway production set to open this summer, Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical Cats is also set to make the leap to the big screen. Tom Hooper, who directed the film version of the Boublil and Schönberg musical Les Misérables, is attached to direct.
The film will be produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title, with stage producer Cameron Mackintosh expected to join them. A timeline and casting have not been set.
Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the original Broadway production of Cats opened in 1982 at the Winter Garden Theatre. The production ran for a record-breaking 18 years and 7,485 performances and earned six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The new Broadway mounting, at the Neil Simon Theatre, begins previews in July.
