Frost/Nixon and Doubt Receive Multiple Academy Award Nominations

The film versions of Frost/Nixon and Doubt are among the top contenders for this year’s Academy Awards, which will be presented on February 22 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Frost/Nixon nabbed a Best Picture slot, along with nods for director Ron Howard, screenwriter Peter Morgan, Best Actor contender Frank Langella, and Best Film Editing.

Doubt received nominations for all four of its leading actors, Meryl Streep for Best Actress, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Best Supporting Actor, and Amy Adams and Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress, as well as John Patrick Shanley for Best Original Screenplay.

Theater veterans Stephen Daldry and David Hare received Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations, respectively, for The Reader, which also received a Best Picture nomination and a Best Actress nomination for Kate Winslet.

A number of actors with theater credits also received nominations, including Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Sean Penn (Milk), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler).

In addition, playwrights Mike Leigh and Martin McDonagh are both competing for Best Original Screenplay for Happy-Go-Lucky and In Bruges, respectively. Composer A.R. Rahman, best known for the musical Bombay Dreams, received three separate nominations for his work on Slumdog Millionaire, another Best Picture nominee.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button led all films with a total of 13 nominations, including Best Picture; and its star Brad Pitt received a Best Actor nomination as did his wife, Angelina Jolie, for Changeling. The fifth Best Picture nomination went to Milk, which also earned nods for director Gus Van Sant, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, and actor Josh Brolin, among others.
