Cast Announced for Max Wolf Friedlich’s New Play The Holes

Max Wolf Friedlich’s new play The Holes will make its world premiere at the Wild Project, with preview performances starting September 8 ahead of an official opening night September 22. Performances are scheduled through October 18.

According to an official press description, “The Holes is set in a decaying bar in a rapidly gentrifying city upstate, where a padlocked back room offers pleasure, relief, and perhaps something far more dangerous. A chilling dark comedy about the great wars shaping our future, the play sets shame against desire, tradition against progress, and community against individualism.”

Friedlich is the writer of Job, a dramatized therapy session for a tech worker on the brink, which TheaterMania’s critic called “an edge-of-your-seat watch.” The play debuted off-Broadway in 2023 before transferring to Broadway in 2024.

The Holes will star Grantham Coleman (Richard II), Tina Benko (Fallen Angels), and Bubba Weiler. Weiler is also a playwright whose latest drama, The Saviors, opened earlier this week at Atlantic Theater Company. You can read TheaterMania’s review of The Saviors here.

Michael Herwitz will direct the production, which will feature work by scenic designer Anna Grigo, lighting designer Evan C. Anderson, sound designer Brandon Bulls, and costume designer Lily Cucinelli.

Friedlich developed the play with dramaturg-producer Hannah Getts. It will be produced by Getts and Adam Rodner.

Robert Pattinson, now appearing as the treacherous suitor Antinous in The Odyssey, will executive produce through his company Icki Eneo Arlo.
